These herbs have been used for many years to assist in digestion, bloating, gas, GERD, and the like. Gentle, yet effective, drink a cup of this 15 minutes or so before meals, or 15 minutes after a big meal, if you have trouble digesting.
However, taking digestive aids isn’t something you should have to do every day to have healthy digestion, but rather to help bring it back in balance. Our diet and lifestyle can greatly impact our digestive health and are areas where small changes can prove very helpful.
Try some simple life changes to bring your digestion into a more permanent balance:
Eat fruits and vegetables which contain healthy nutrients and fiber to support your digestive system and overall health. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables also contain cancer-fighting properties. Avoid fruit juices mostly, as they are so high in sugar. Fresh fruit is best.
Eat nuts and whole grains such as brown rice, barley, oatmeal, and sprouted whole wheat bread for dietary fiber, iron, antioxidants, and other healthy nutrients and to support good gut bacteria. Avoid refined processed foods including white flour, white bread, crackers, and pastries.
Avoid processed meats which have an a lot of sodium, fat, and nitrates that have been linked to colon cancer and digestive problems. Choose chicken, fish and legumes and limit red meat to twice a week at most. Limit fried foods and high temperature grilling and choose to saute, steam, boil, or poach instead.
Sugar causes inflammation and can upset the balance of good gut bacteria, necessary for proper digestion. Include probiotics to nourish your gut.
Remember to drink plenty of filtered water daily and exercise to aid in good digestion. And get at least 7-8 hours of good sleep.
