Antibiotics are effective against bacteria. But what happens if your body builds up resistance to antibiotics, and in turn promotes resistance to bacteria?
There are hidden dangers in many commercial hand sanitizers. Many contain “triclosan”, which contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Using hand sanitizers may actually lower your resistance to diseases by killing good bacteria, which normally helps protect against bad bacteria. At the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found that health care employees who were most likely to use hand sanitizers over soap and water for routine hand washing were nearly six times more at risk for outbreaks of norovirus, which causes most cases of acute gastroenteritis.(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3168661/). Other dangers of triclosan include immune system harm and hormone problems.
Our organic cane alcohol is 190 proof, or 95%., which we dilute to 75%. Our organic white vinegar is an excellent disinfectant, however when sold on most store shelves, it is only a five percent concentration of acetic acid and will kill only about 80 percent of germs. We use an organic white vinegar that is a 30 % concentration. We include Aloe to help protect and condition hands when using hand sanitizers frequently.
Most commercial hand sanitizers are scented, and likely loaded with toxic chemicals. Companies aren’t required to disclose the ingredients that make up their “secret” synthetic scents, and therefore generally are made from dozens of chemicals. Synthetic fragrances contain phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors that mimic hormones and could alter genital development.
We chose to scent our Hand Sanitizing Spray with essential oils of organic lavender, lemon, tea tree, orange, peppermint and thyme, for their own antibacterial properties.
Many hand sanitizers also contain parabens, which are used to preserve other ingredients and extend a product’s shelf life, and are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.
Best to stay with simple, organic ingredients. Our hand spray is convenient to travel with, when soap and water are not an option. Wash hands frequently, but when you can’t do that, reach for our organic alternative.
